Understanding Differences

“Being different simply means you have something unique to offer the world.”-Insbright

The most unique thing about people is that we all see things differently. Our personalities, beliefs, and the way we think are different than any other person. Though we share some similarities for the most part we are unique individuals. The way we think and how we see life is through what we learned from our parents, culture, nationality, experiences, and so forth. Since we all were raised by parents or care givers from different parts of the world it’s no wonder why we don’t see the world the same way.

When having discussions with people they might see things differently then us. What we know or have experienced has equipped us with the knowledge that we have which helps us make decisions. Decisions someone else may perceive as bad judgement may be good judgement in our eyes. I used to wonder why someone did not have knowledge about certain topics that pertain to life because as humans we think what we know everyone else knows but it doesn’t work like that. That’s why I recently wrote about the importance of listening because you can learn something new when you listen, or you can teach someone something when they choose to listen.

Learning something new everyday or listening is how I continue to grow and mature in life. I love learning and self-development is something I strive to do daily. Most people are so busy trying to convince people to think like them when they should celebrate them for their differences. I think its okay to address your opinion about something but listen to theirs and see their reason behind it. As a mom I used to get frustrated when I see my child make an easy task difficult. Yes, they get the task completed but sometimes it hurts watching them struggle completing it. After they finish, I offer suggestions but it’s up to them to take the advice. In life we will notice people doing thing the “difficult way” but have you ever thought to ask yourself is your way the most efficient. We all value our opinions, why because they are our opinions. When we talk, we value what we say.

As a life coach and mentor to people I have learned that most people will not take my advice, but I plant the seed of knowledge in hopes that maybe it will grow later. I had the same discussion with the same individual and though someone may think it is hopeless I don’t give up on people. I look at life as how I want to be treated and I base that on how I treat others. I don’t give up on people because I don’t want anyone to give up on me. I can recall the times when I was given advice and I didn’t take it, but I used it later in life. It takes time and sometimes were not mature in that area in our life. We may not understand how the advice is helpful, and granted it is good advice, we just can’t use it because we are not mature to understand why we need it.

When I was making a lot of mistakes in relationships, I didn’t see that I was making mistakes at first it took plenty of failed attempts to realize that I needed to do something better. Since I wasn’t mature enough to see what was causing the failed relationships it took multiple times before I realized maybe I was doing something wrong. When we make choices, we make them based on what we perceive will be beneficial to us and though the choice may seem wrong to others looking on the outside we can’t see it because we don’t’ know what we don’t know. It’s good to take advice but I think learning from your mistakes will help you in your future because you understand cause and effect better. The choice we make comes with a cause and effect and it can end in a way that isn’t pleasing to us or one that we are satisfied with. Either way we learn something from it maybe not the first go around but eventually.

We all make choices that may not end pleasing but when we see someone else that isn’t experiences in a certain area, we tend to treat them as if they are unintelligent because they don’t understand something. We must always learn to share the compassion we have for ourselves with others because we are all doing life the best we can with what we know. That’s why I believe its good to be out going and get to know people of all ages and ethnicities. When you talk to people you learn something, and this is what’s going to help you understand why people think they way they do and why they do the things they do.

You must learn to be empathetic and have understanding that we are not the only version of a human on earth. There billions and more of people that think differently and see things ways that we never imagine and while what you think they might be struggling with they don’t see it themselves. We are all doing life and we are all matured on different levels. Maturity isn’t even in all areas of our lives and that’s why its important to understand that maybe someone that you think is struggling may not be there yet.

So, when you are having discussion with people always remember that people don’t know what they don’t know. Just because you may be knowledgeable about something doesn’t mean someone else is. We look at people as if they are strange because they don’t know something, but we must understand that what we know we may have learned somewhere in life and even if we taught ourselves, we must understand that we are unique for a reason. So, before you ridicule someone from being different try teaching them something, advice should be freely given. I try to give advice daily because what we learn in life should always be passed around to others who may not know.

So, as you go about your day think before you speak, learn to listen, be compassionate, and understand everyone may not know what we know but if you give advice and plant the seed maybe one day it will grow.

“Not everyone thinks the way you think, knows the things you know, believes the things you believe, nor acts the way you act. Remember this and you will go a long way in getting along with people.”
