Weekend Happiness

“The Trick is to enjoy life. Don’t wish away your days, waiting for better ones ahead.”-Marjorie Pay Hinckley

Most people get excited about the weekends. Parties happen on the weekend, weddings, family functions, sporting events, etcetera, etcetera. Majority of people plan things on the weekend because most 9-5 jobs are off on the weekends. School is out on the weekends. Parents get to enjoy their children without the mundane schedule of routine and errands. For the people without children they get to relax and let their hair down per say. I used to get excited about the weekend. Every work week I looked forward to my day off. I cherished my weekends more than I cherished my weekdays.

Majority of people feel this way. They coast through the week not realizing then when the weekend comes, they wonder why it goes by fast. We try to conquer so many things on the weekend and we wonder why Monday comes faster and faster each week. I was speaking with a colleague and he made me aware that he was ready for his weekend.

We were having a conversation and suddenly, he said “man I can’t wait till my day off.” He also added that only on his days off is when he is the happiest. So, I asked him if you are miserable working here why do you continue to be here? I also told him that he misses out on a lot of things when he waits till he has a day off to be happy. He agreed and rephrase his words by saying that he enjoys his time off versus his time at work. I believe we all do enjoy being with our love ones or just being away from work sometimes, but we should never work somewhere that steals our happiness.

I wrote in my previous blogs about what is happiness? Why happiness is our priority? Happiness is a me thing but there are also external factors that can ruin our mood. We all have things that irritate us, pet peeves, and all sorts of stuff. Things that we basically cannot control because it’s someone else’s actions. We do have things that we can control such as our relationships, career, finances, education, our actions, choices, and so forth. The person we are in a relationship with is due to our choice. Our career we have, the type of education we chose, and how we choose to spend our money is our choice. We have complete control over our life. When we choose to stay somewhere that we don’t enjoy that’s part of our choice.

My colleague that was complaining about not being happy at work didn’t want to accept the fact that it was his fault for his unhappiness. Most people blame others for their unhappiness but if you ask them why they are unhappy then you’ll realize that they are the root cause of their unhappiness. When I am struggling in an area of my life I look inward instead of outward. When I look inward, I am honest with myself. This is the only way I can fix my issues. I’m an adult and as much as I would like for my mom or my husband to fix my issues, they can’t. Why? Because they didn’t create them. I had to stop blaming everyone and everything for why I was in the situation I was in.

When I play the blame game, I find myself drowning deeper in my issues. If I start working on them instead of throwing a pity party, then slowing I begin to pull myself out of the pool of water and gradually float to the top. They say success is like an iceberg, it truly is. You are going to experience some highs and lows but don’t live for weekend happiness. Whatever you want to do in life will come but don’t be miserable while you’re doing it. I had to learn to take life one day at a time Enjoy the weekends but also the weekdays. We must look for beauty in each day. Don’t focus on what day it is. Life is meant to be enjoyed and not endured.

Don’t live a life where your happiness is revolved around the weekend. Get out each day and do something that you love and enjoy. You don’t have to spend hours doing it a few minutes counts. Be like a child, a child never waits to the weekend to have fun, they play every day. They are always happy and filled with energy. They have so much life in them and adults are living a lifeless life. Decide today that you won’t live a lifeless life, that you will have fun even during the weekday. Enjoy each day on earth, don’t wait till the weekend to start enjoying life.

“It’s not that we spend five days looking forward to just two. It’s that most people do what they enjoy most on those two days. Imagine living a life where every day are Saturdays and Sundays. Make everyday your weekend. Make everyday a play-day.” -James A. Murphy
